In this excerpt from the Shiva Sutras: The Supreme Awakening (Third Awakening), verse 8, Swamiji explains that "there are only two aspects found in this universe: one energy, and the next, energy holder."
It is also said in Sarvamaṅgalā śāstra.
śaktiśca śaktimāṁścaiva padārthadvayamucyate /
śaktayo'sya jagatkṛtsnaṁ śaktimāṁstu maheśvaraḥ //
(Sarvamaṅgalā Śāstra)
There are two aspects only found in this universe: one energy, and the next, energy holder. The energy holder is Lord Śiva and energy is Śakti of Lord. Energy and energy holder, these are two aspects found in this universe.
Out of these two, śaktayo'sya jagat kṛtsnaṁ, energy is held in each and every part of the universe; śaktayā asya jagat kṛtsnam this whole universe is in fact the energy of Lord Śiva. The whole universe is everything, whatever you feel, whatever you hear, whatever you find in the daily routine of your daily way of life – that is energy, that is the existence of energy. Śaktimāna, the energy holder, that Lord Śiva, is Maheśvara himself.
So nothing is lost!
When you lose something you experience that there is something less. But that lessening is also there. But that lessening, if it is found in the way of awareness, that lessening also will improve the functioning of that God consciousness, universal God consciousness.
DEVOTEE: Lessening of what?
SWAMIJI: Lessening of your consciousness. When your consciousness is lessening day-by-day, and you are aware of it, nothing is lost.
When a madman is mad, completely mad, and he knows that he is mad, [then] he is not mad. [If] he is aware that he is mad, [then] he is not mad at all.
As long as he is unaware of his madness, he is mad; he is considered to be mad, from others point of view. For him he is not mad. When he is aware that he is actually mad, [then] he is not mad.
When he [yogi] is aware he has lessened his nature of Self, [then] he has not lessened it, because he is aware.
The nature of Self is awareness.
When awareness is held, got, finished.
